ORPC provides leadership in the permitting and licensing process by working with scientists and state and federal regulators to better understand the potential interactions of marine energy turbines with the marine environment. In the process, we are creating new knowledge and tools for decision-making applicable to projects globally.

ORPC has developed and implemented an adaptive management approach designed to utilize our environmental monitoring results along with studies from other marine energy projects and related work worldwide. An adaptive management team, consisting of federal and state regulators and technical advisors, guided monitoring and licensing requirements for ORPC’s Federal Energy Regulatory Commission licensed site for a decade. In collaboration with the adaptive management team, we confidently demonstrated that monitoring can be adjusted proportionally to a project’s measured risk to the environment. In so doing, we established a model that has attracted global interest.
