Our Founders

ORPC was founded by left to right Paul H. Wells, John R. Cooper and Christopher R. Sauer in 2004. The original idea for the Company came from Wells who had a career in cruise ship operations and had, for years, wondered if there was a way to generate electricity from the Florida Current off the Florida coast, the strongest continuously flowing ocean current in the world. Through a mutual friend, Cooper and Sauer, who had spent most of their careers in developing, financing, building, owning and operating cogeneration and independent power projects, were introduced to Wells as people who could help him put together a business plan for building projects that would sell electricity generated from the Florida Current.

They had their first meeting, and it was quickly determined that the systems needed to generate electricity from ocean currents did not exist yet, so their independent power producer business model would not work. If there was to be a business the three men would have to develop and commercialize their own marine renewable energy technology, a much bigger challenge than originally envisioned.

But on the positive side, two-thirds of the Earth is covered in water that is almost constantly moving, creating an almost boundless reservoir of energy, and most people live near this “reservoir.” If the technology could be developed and projects could be built, it would have the potential to revolutionize how electricity is generated and distributed throughout the world. This became the compelling reason behind the formation of ORPC.
