ORPC performed a resource assessment and analysis of tidal energy potential with results showing that power from a tidal energy project could economically provide the community with a stable, flat priced and environmentally sound alternative to diesel generation.
ORPC was contracted by a wave power technology developer to provide guidance on a demonstration project. Our services included community outreach, assistance with resource characterization, regulatory support and drafting of a marine mammal monitoring study plan.

ORPC teamed with two consulting firms to assess hydropower resources throughout Maine, including marine and hydrokinetic potential. Reviewing existing resource data for tidal, wave and river sites, we developed a prioritization methodology for ranking site viability. Results indicated Maine’s resources are conducive to marine and hydrokinetic development.
NREL researchers are collecting and analyzing data in U.S. coastal waters to identify premier sites for future wave and tidal energy projects. The agency contracted ORPC to secure necessary permits and deploy a tidal turbulence measurement device off the Maine coast. Data collected is validating NREL hydrodynamic computer models of potential wave and tidal energy hotspots. We have also contracted with NREL for similar assessments for wave energy near Kodiak, Alaska, and tidal energy near Nikiski, Alaska.

We partnered with SEAI to identify tidal energy opportunities suitable for development in County Donegal’s coastal waters. A key component of our work was to engage local communities and stakeholders through interviews and public meetings. ORPC also evaluated the local supply chain’s suitability for offshore renewable energy projects, licensing and environmental barriers, and economic impact considerations.
